Shhh… Steel toe boots are sexy!
Teasing my husband for watching shows that make zero sense to a sane person is one of my most cherished past times. Over the years there have been many which reign as tease worth champion of the season, and last year my favorite was this show called Ax Men. For those of you who do not know of this recent phenomenon, Ax Men is a History Channel series going strong on its fourth season. I had only caught glimpses of the show and the teasing only started when my husband grew a grizzly man beard and purchased safety boots.
One night I could not sleep no matter what I had tried, and I thought a show which I had no interest in would certainly put me to sleep so I turned on a recorded episode of Ax Men and I snuggled on the sofa ready to drift soundly into a dream state. Well I should have realized the moment I figured out this was a History Channel special, but I started learning some interesting facts about the American history behind logging. No pun intended, but its roots stretches back to the early 1600’s as lumber was an essential item for the 1607 Jamestown settlers who later expanded the North American economy.
Unbeknown to me, logging is am American foundation which pays for the food on many American families tables, and puts the clothes on their backs. This series is a reality based program following the lives of logging teams which adequately depicts the entertainingly dangerous jobs these individuals have, and I have a greater appreciation for wood! The logging career is scary beyond words! You really have to watch it to understand what these brave fools put their lives on the line for, and wonder what their Mothers are thinking! Proper safety measures are no joke in that field, and items from Combat boots to proper helmets are used as recommended, however there is no shortness of “oh #$@%” and missing teeth.
Season four spices things up a bit by adding a woman to the mixture in one of the logging teams. Greenhorns are frowned upon in this show, and adding a woman greenhorn only caused more drama for the cameras, and it was here that I became secretly addicted, still teasing my husband when he turned it on at night as I would go to bed. This chick had it all! If I remember correctly she was a forest firefighter and was laid off due to budget cuts, thus was forced to take work wherever she could, and was brave enough to take on the challenges of logging, and even more so, in front of cameras and a million viewers.
This show is filled with action, suspense, and drama. There are plenty of broken bones and close calls that keep you watching, but leave it to the History Channel to add in entertaining education! I learn a great deal about American History from a point which has never been presented to me in my many years of schooling. I guess I learned a lot this year! One, an education can actually come from paying a little extra on the cable bill each month, and two, women look sexy in steel toe boots!
