Favourite Cartoon Horses in Popular Culture
Throughout history, horses have always been the ultimate sidekick – they’re the transport, companion and all-round best buddy of the hero. But horses haven’t just been a favourite in Western or cowboy movies. They have also been featured prominently in some of the most popular children’s animations and cartoons throughout the decades, all different in appearance and personality – from bright orange pessimistic ponies, to psychedelic talking ponies, to those with manes made out of flames, the trusty steed has been reinvented countless times. Here’s our pick of the best horse characters in children’s TV.
Pokémon – Some well-known Pokémon from the videogame and animated TV series of the same name were based on ponies and horses. Ponyta and Rapidash were horse Pokémon with manes made out of flames.
Pokey – Pokey was a main character in the stop-animation series Gumby, created in the early 1950’s. He was Gumby’s talking orange pony sidekick, and was often the sceptical, pessimistic one of the pair.
Bullseye – Woody’s trusty horse sidekick in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, Bullseye was a part of the ‘Round Up Gang’ in the much-loved films. He has inspired many toy Bullseye dolls which are available in toy stores everywhere.
My Little Pony – Launched in 1983, My Little Pony has become a cult retro favourite amongst young girls (and the young at heart), and we’re sure they had at least a few kids trying to persuade their parents to start looking for ponies for sale. Some diehard fans have even created their own versions of the My Little Ponies, creating ponies modelled after Lady Gaga, Princess Leia, Elvis Presley and Gene Simmons.
Nightmare – The horse ghost in the animated cartoon series Casper the Friendly Ghost, created in the late 1930s. The Nightmare and Casper duo had a series of comic books based on their adventures together.
