Five Money Saving Tips for Students
Are you embark on your university course? Would you live away from home for the first time and manage your own budget? I have listed five ways you can save money while studying for your lucrative future employment.
Containing student debt quickly approaching £ 4,500 a year, it is worth trying to save money when you can. With the price of fuel, food and heat all on the rise, it is important to find ways of minimizing your out goings, while they enjoy the student life fully.
These are my top five tips for saving money as a student.
Learn to Cook
It may seem like a stupid idea, but you will be amazed at the amount of people who can not cook when they come to the university. A boy I shared rooms with in the first year could not’t fry and egg or cooking baked beans! Of his family owe a hotel and he was always cooked for either parents or by the chef! Basic cooking is simple to master, simply follow the instructions, you’re bright enough to get to university, really what’s not that hard. You will save a small fortune if you master a few basic meals.
If you can cook a good Sheppard pie, spaghetti Bolognese, curry, homemade pizza, pasta bake, omelettes, risotto and a good old roast dinner so you’ll be halfway there. Get a person who has a good mastery of the basics of showing you how to whip up these staples dishes. With little practice you’ll master it, it’s not rocket science. You will save money on meals, eating healthy and impress your classmates with your mature approach to living away from home.
Go to the library or Buy Second Hand Books
One of the first things you should do when you get to university, is to get your library card. Yes, before you get full and kiss someone or something you regret get in the queue for your library card.
You need to do a lot of reading in the length of your training. You will get a reading list. Unlike school, you won’t have textbooks. Take your reading list in hand and scale of the huge shelves of the library to get a majority of the books you need. Even in these days where you have to pay a fee that won’t be enough books to go around. Get in early to avoid having to buy them.
If you miss the boat in the library so buy them second hand. Most universities will have a second hand bookshop which sells old books, a bulletin board (either the real thing or an electronic one), or you can shop with Amazon or eBay. Their really is no point in buying new textbooks. Just make sure you are quick off the mark or they will all be gone.
Switch to the pay as you go mobile phone
If you’re on a contract with your mobile then get out of it and switch to pay as you go. It takes maybe a little higher but you will be able to control your spending so much easier that you really need a £ 30 contract when all you need is to send a few texts each month? You won’t be confronted with a huge bill at the end of the month, and you can budget so much easier.
Install VoIP on your PC
For long distance calls to family and friends have a form of free VoIP installed on your computer. It’s free to use and with a cheap webcam so much fun. To see your boyfriend or girlfriend that you left behind and not just hear them. Best to hide those love bites though!
