Violin Lessons – Should You Have Two Teachers?

There are millions of people worldwide who take violin lessons and for that matter probably tens of millions of people that take some kind of musical instrument lesson on a regular basis. This brings up the never ending debate of whether or not you should have more than one teacher.

I am not sure there is a right or wrong answer to this question but there are certainly pros and cons to both sides of the story.

Having one teacher is very beneficial especially if you gel well with them. It gives you the opportunity to build a strong teacher pupil relationship, bounce ideas off someone and get one direct approach to technical and musical challenges. But perhaps the downside to having one teacher is that they may lack in certain areas of playing, an area that could be supported and exploited by someone else that excels in this particular area.

For example, some people have two teachers who they visit weekly. One teacher may guide them through repertoire and performance technique, whilst another may provide technical training.

The negative part of having two teachers is where there is a conflict of ideas. It might not be that one teacher is right and what each is wrong but simply the contradictions that can occur could be very confusing to the pupil and may ultimately slow that pupil’s progress.

So when you are taking violin lessons it is important to address this issue of teachers early on. My personal advice is to think which method will ensure your progress at the quickest. More than likely if you find a good teacher it will be beneficial to have only one guide, mentor or teacher.
