Disposable Contacts: Not Wasteful, Blissful
It is hard for some people to shake the stigma of disposable contacts as being somehow wasteful or irresponsible. This is why the industry opted to use the “one-day” moniker for disposables. The word “disposable” once conjured images of convenience and forward-thinking industry. Now, unfortunately, it conjures images of waste, landfills, and Al Gore. The key to remember is that almost everything is disposable now.
Disposable contacts could well be called “thin” contacts. They are considerable thinner than their conventional counterparts. To be sure, this thinness is what makes them so comfortable and, ultimately, disposable. You cannot effectively clean them as they will tear. Instead, you can only wear them once or twice, and then dispose of them.
Price is always a sticking point. Some consumers are turned off by the price of a six-month supply of disposable contact lenses. Though disposable contacts are more expensive, that cost is offset by the fact that no cleaning solutions or enzymatic cleaners are necessary. They are disposable and are not meant to be worn more than one day. They require no maintenance or storage. This is a very attractive aspect of disposable lenses: their convenience.
Forget everything you know about contact lens cleaning and solutions. Now, you can say goodbye to the tedious, nightly cleaning ritual. An inherent and obvious advantage of disposable contacts is the fact their thinness allows them to be worn overnight. As they will be disposed of, there is little to no fear of inciting an eye infection. The protein buildup is inconsequential as the lenses are destined for the trash bin.
Disposable lenses are more comfortable and require far less maintenance than conventional lenses. There is no need to clean or care for the lenses as they are only meant to be worn once. In the long term, they are more cost effective, comfortable, and leave a smaller carbon footprint to manufacture.
The beauty of disposable contacts is their comfort. Forget the price point and remember you’ll be saving by not having to pay for cleaning supplies.
