A Plumbing NVQ or a VRQ, whats the difference….
Here at the Plumbing College we get asked ‘Whats the difference between a Plumbing NVQ and an VRQ?’ almost on a daily basis, so we thought it might be useful to write a article to explain.
What is a Plumbing NVQ (National Vocational Qualifications):
A Plumbing NVQ is a work-related, hands-on qualification and has been designed to show a student’s skill and ability to carry out a job effectively. Evidence of this is often provided, and supported by, witness statements from colleagues and observations by an appointed and qualified assessor.
Typically a plumbing NVQ can be gained through full time education or by having work assessed once in the plumbing industry.
What is an Plumbing VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualifications):
Like an NVQ, a Plumbing VRQ is a practical and work related qualification, concentrating on developing students employment skills. Our VRQ plumbing course is delivered to students through a taught programme; a series of tasks will be set to help students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the plumbing subject.
To help reinforce and further develop their skills students attend practical plumbing sessions alongside their theory work.
Unlike many NVQ’s students can work towards a VRQ qualification on a part-time basis allowing them to continue with their current commitments. This flexibility gives students the chance to learn their new plumbing trade alongside work, often studying at home.
So in summary….
Basically both NVQs and VRQs in plumbing are great qualifications for students to achieve to become a plumber, they show that the student has gained skills and experience directly linked to the plumbing industry.
However, the extra flexibility of a VRQ is a major benefit, this is especially the case for Plumbing College students that are looking to study plumbing courses around jobs and other commitments. The flexibility was one of the main reasons that the Plumbing College chose to offer students a VRQ (details of our plumbing qualifications can be found here). Successful completion of the Plumbing College course will help act as a stepping stone for many students into the plumbing industry, once there the opportunity to continue with extra studies is available.
