Because of the very strong “green living” movement sweeping through California since the seventies; it has the lowest energy use per capita than any other state in the US. They believe in living green so much that in 1984 California voters banned the approval of new nuclear power because of concerns over radioactive waste disposal. There are also more people “living off the grid” which means they do not draw any power from the power companies but rather rely one hundred percent off of alternative energy means—such as solar or wind power. A lot of the people “living off the grid” actually sell the extra energy they produce back to the energy companies. There are many that contribute this to the large mix of Eco activists with the hub of technology based in Silicon Valley. California is one of the largest hydroelectric power producers in the United States, and with adequate rainfall, hydroelectric power typically accounts for close to one-fifth of State electricity generation. Due to strict emission laws, only a few small coal-fired power plants operate in California. However, while the majority of imported power is Eco friendly there is a steady flow of coal and natural gas power flowing from the south west.
California leads the nation in electricity generation from non-hydroelectric renewable energy sources, including geothermal power, wind power, and solar power. A facility known as “The Geysers,” located in the Mayacamas Mountains north of San Francisco, is the largest group of geothermal power plants in the world, with more than 750 megawatts of installed capacity. The Alta-Oak Creek Mojave wind project is an approved 800 megawatt wind farm proposal which would include up to 320 wind turbines in the mountains between Tehachapi and Mojave. California has the some of the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the United States, with a target for California to obtain a third of its electricity from renewable resources by 2020. Although California’s population increases steadily each year; the state does not build many new major power plants, instead existing in-state power plants are expanded and power output is increased constantly going toward more eco friendly means. California is leading the way and setting an impressive example on how to live green.
