Danube Delta a miracle of Eastern Europe

One of the first things you hear when someone tells you about Romania is “Danube Delta”. If you look at the map of Romania, you will notice a dark green area in the easternmost part of the country, right above the Black Sea. The Romanian delta is a UNESCO protected area, the largest in EU and one of the most important 3 river deltas in the World. To get there, you need to fly to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. You will take a 5 hours train to Tulcea, the most important town in the Danube Delta. That’s where your adventure in the Romanian delta begins. You can also fly directly to Constanta, Romania, the most important Romanian city on the Black Sea, very close to the delta. The Danube is the longest river in EU; several European capitals were built along the Danube: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest & Belgrade. Before flowing into the Black Sea, the Danube forms a large delta that spreads across 4000 sq.km, along 3 main branches.

If you plan to visit Romania, you might also want to visit the castle of Dracula (Bran Castle), Peles Castle, the Painted Monasteries of Bukovina or the Black Sea but don’t forget to include the Danube Delta among the must-see destinations.

The Danube Delta is the least inhabited area in the continental Europe. Less than 15.000 people live in this enormous aquatic playground. You will find 320 species of migratory birds, most of them unique on the continent. Over 1 million birds spend the winter in the Danube Delta. You will enjoy the perfect solitude of one of the most fascinating places in Europe. Romanian tourism is not yet fully developed and that comes with goods and bads. One of the best things is that you can enjoy amazing places for less than 1/3 of the price you would pay for a vacation in Western Europe.

Don’t miss the wonderful cuisine of Danube Delta, a mix of Romanian, Ukrainian and Russian cuisines. Fish will obviously be the most important ingredient. If you want you can choose to live with an authentic fishermen family, so you will enjoy the authentic recipes of the Romanian delta. You can also hire a boat or ask a villager to take you in a tour of the area. Most of the villages are only accessible by boat but this is the best part of being in the Danube Delta.

You will discover a very different side of Europe, where traditions haven’t change much for the last centuries. Romania, a country full of surprises if you are ready to discover its true soul. And the best of Romania is that it is so diverse that you will need years to understand it. If you decide to travel to Romania you will realize it is not only closer and cheaper than you thought but also probably one of the most spectacular places you will find in Europe. It is cheap to fly to Romania and if you decide to rent a car in Romania, it will give enough freedom to explore the destinations you choose. A different option is to take a cruise on the Danube from Budapest or Vienna and let the Danube Delta be your final destination. Enjoy.
