Preventing a Tax Audit

It is tax season again and the pressure is on, but there is no reason why you should be worried about having to face tax auditors this year. Here are a few key things to keep in mind when doing your taxes to prevents getting a call from your locally registered auditors.

Be honest with yourself. One of the primary reason people end up getting audited on their taxes is because they were embarrassed or ashamed to put the truth down on their tax forms. This is an extremely silly reason for an audit. Nobody at your government’s tax centers cares how much or how little money you make, how many kids you have, what your part time job is or whether or not you are married at the age of 45. All they care about is that the true and vital information is filled out and sent to them. Do not let your own personal insecurities get in the way of filling out your tax forms accurately. You can lie about your weight on your favorite social media site, but not to your government (well, you can probably shave off five pounds for your driver’s license, but that is all).

Be an average person. Unfortunately this is not the easiest advice to follow but it is true. Tax officials like to see median incomes from median families with median expenses and loans. If you are an average person then you should not have any problems, if you are not an average person and have had many issues with tax audits in the past then you might want to consider restructuring your life a bit so that your finances are in order. Generally if someone knows what is going on with their money then they will not have to fear the registered auditor’s guild.

You cannot trick the government. Your friend’s uncle who house sits and drives an ice cream truck might have tricked the government and I am certain that the friend of a friend of a friend of a friend pulled it off just fine, but you cannot trick the government. Even if you do successfully pull a fast one on your tax forms the rest of your life will be spent in the fear that somebody somewhere will notice. It is not worth it to trick the tax offices even if you think you can.

Keep these things in mind when filing taxes this year and you should have no worries when it comes to getting your check in the mail and not receiving a call from a big scary government entity.
