Small Bussines, Big Office

For small businesses in search of clients, first impressions mean everything. So when a home-based fiscal planner wants to startle a millionaire CEO, discussing stocks at the coffee shop just won’t do it. Problem is, an one-man shop wont be able to afford a well-appointed office at a prestigious business location.

As National Small Business Week sees the more than 25 million entrepreneurs who establish the backbone of the U.S. economy, it’s ironic that high-priced commercial real estate keeps many of them from understanding their potential. But the rules are changing.

Here are three ways an emerging number of creative entrepreneurs are leaving the coffee shop, and still keeping in the black.

1. Outsourced Offices: Fully furnished, ready-to-use office space has become the appropriate answer for small-business owners who require a professional location to branch out and get serious, even if it’s on a part-time basis. With the business center supplying everything from furniture to IT support and an assistant, start-up costs are minimal. And since the terms are on a monthly or daily basis, there’s no danger of getting stuck in a long-term lease. Small-business owners can customize an office plan that meets their particular needs.

2. Facilities that Fit: What about small-business owners who already have an office but can’t manage the professional facilities fee that huge companies take for granted? “A recruiting specialist who needs to conduct interviews across the country can skip the plane ride and book a videoconferencing room,” said Dixon. Also, advisors and trainers can have sessions in fully stocked meeting rooms booked by the hour or the day.

3. Access Anywhere: The technological revolution has created lots of mobile professionals whose offices are hotel rooms and airports. But even the best gadget-heavy road warriors can long for a real desk, a desk phone and a receptionist. From Hoboken to Hong Kong, some outsourced office providers have locations worldwide, so business nomads always have a productive place to plug in and meet with clients.

While the costs of long-term leases once kept small businesses looking small-time, today’s entrepreneurs are using inventive office strategies to stake their claim next to the toughest players in their industries.
