Nowadays, a wide range of kids wear is available for children of all age groups. However, in the earlier days only few types of kids wear existed. Any type of clothing was also very costly since there were hardly any machines for manufacturing clothes. The history of kids wear refers to ancient times, several years ago.
Initially most of the clothing for adults and kids was made from leather, fur or woven grass. After few years, people started weaving cloths made from yarn; and many children only had a pair of clothes. The dresses for both small boys and small girls were just simple, neat and clean; compared to today’s fashionable clothes. There were very limited styles and all the kids were plainly dressed up during olden times.

Buttoned-up formal clothes were worn both indoors and outdoors. Little boys as well as little girls used to wear white dresses called frocks with cloth belts called sashes around their waist. These clothes were mostly made from cotton fabric that was either knitted or woven; and hand-made at home.
Formal shirts and ties were worn occasionally with jackets and coats on the top. Children used to wear vests, shorts and loose cotton caps in summer; and sweaters, coats with tight woolen caps in winter. In those earlier days, there was no specific fashion and clothes for little boys were similar to their father’s clothes and dresses for little girls was just like their mother’s clothes. Cheap cotton or linen dresses were usually worn daily, whereas costly silk dresses were kept only for special occasions.
Girls also used to wear pinafores covered with a smock that prevented their dresses from getting dirty. Embroidery and lace were frequently used for decorating special occasion pinafores. Various types of highly decorated pinafores were worn for specific events that included going to a party or wedding. Small girls wear were also made from dotted, white clothes and even a yellowish fabric that was known as Nankeen. Also the aprons for everyday use were plain and without any designs on them.

The upper class children wore fancy dresses and better clothing. Small boys wear consisted of buttoned-up shirts and short pants; while the older boys wore long pants.
From the olden days, girls and boys clothing are identified by colors. This particularly happened where little boys looked like little girls. Small boys wore blue colored clothes and small girls wore pink ones; and this is even done today. Small boys used to wear long suits like adult men and small girls wore long dresses like adult women.
The fabrics and clothes used for special functions or events were basically very limited. Small boys and later on even small girls frequently wore sailor suits that had a special large collar. Rompers were worn by both small boys and girls while playing. One more types of dress called the pantalets were also worn by little boys as well as girls. However, the boys used to wear plain ones and girls wore fancy ones.
