You need to paint on the stain very carefully to be sure all the holes are filled up. When finished appropriately the rain will just flow off the wood without leading to any damage. Most tables will require treatment every couple of years depending on the weather condition and the quality of the underlying wood. Hardwood is more resistant to the weather than many soft woods.
