Firstly, the morning after pill prevents the ovulation i.e. prevents the production of eggs from ovaries which in turn prevents the fertilization process. Secondly, it also alters the normal menstrual cycle i.e. it delays ovulation and thus, pregnancy is not possible. Thirdly, it aggravates the lining of the endometrium of uterus and makes it unfit for implantation of fertilized egg there. This also further prevents pregnancy.

Certain advantages as well as disadvantages are noticed while using this. These are listed underneath. The advantages of morning after pills are that it is accessible readily in the market and if you are over 17 years of age, recommendation of doctor is also not compulsory. It acts as a last resort to avoid the unwanted and unplanned pregnancy. Even if the pills are not able to avoid the pregnancy, they do not cause any harm to the fetus. These don’t have any effect on the fertility of the women. Their fertility remains the same as previously and returns to normal with the onset of next menstrual cycle. There are also several disadvantages of using morning after pills. They can cause several side effects like nausea, dizziness, vomiting, vertigo, diarrhea, irregular periods, abdominal pain etc. Little serious complications like hypertension, liver disorders, blood clots in lungs, intestine, heart etc. can also crop up. Those women who are above 35 years of age and have diseases like heart problems, liver diseases, cancer etc, are recommended not to take this. Chances of having ectopic pregnancy i.e. deposition of fertilized egg in places other than uterus i.e. in fallopian tubes, are more in women who take Morning after pills. Skin rashes and breathing problems develop when women become allergen to this. Morning After Pills can cause serious complications in women who have diabetes, migraine or heart diseases.
