Here are several tips in taking good care of party dresses, prom dresses, backless dresses, cocktail dresses, and other women’s apparel:
- The key and very first step of taking care of women’s dresses is to ensure proper storage. Always keep them hanging on a hanger except if the fabric of the dress is knitted because it may cause the dress to stretch. In this case, better to put the dress on a soft material like coated foam. This will make sure also that no hanger marks will appear on the clothes or dresses. Going back, much better if the dresses will be stored with storage bags. This will prevent the dress from contamination from dusts. When this method is used, make sure to put holes on the plastic storage bags. This must be done so that the dress may stay fresh and avoid unnecessary accumulation of smell. Hence, scents and odor must be removed from the dress before the storage.
- Fabrics must be determined as another step for taking good care of dresses. For instance with party dresses, a party dress may be made from organza which are very shiny; being used as well for wedding gowns and formal gatherings. With this type of fabric, dresses must be checked frequently because the stitches of this dress type can easily separate.
- If it happens that the clothes had been stained from the party or gathering, never try to experiment on removing the stain, especially, tough stains. If done so, this may result discoloration of fabric and the dress may not be used again. Bringing it to a professional cleaner is a great idea.
- When laundering, learn to read instructions for dresses with care labels especially with most women’s clothing. Most clothing has laundry tags that give instruction/s of the proper manner of laundering the dress: proper washing, drying, bleaching, water temperature, and ironing symbols. And more importantly, the labels tell so much about the details of the fabric from which the dress was made of. Also, make sure to separate colored dresses from white ones, empty the pockets, and unfasten buttons. This will prevent the clothes from being damaged while washing them. And do not allow clothes be soaked for long period of time; and refrain from exposing the dress too much under direct sunlight when drying to maintain the vibrant color and softness of the garment.
