Brett Chepenik: How To Do Proper Pull Ups

Pull Ups is a strength training exercise which is designed to strengthen the back, biceps and shoulders and increase overall body strength and muscularity.

The pull up movement begins with the arms fully extended above the head, with an overhand grip on the bar. Lift your chin above the bar while keeping your elbows back and pushing your chest up during the movement. Upon bringing your chin above the bar, return to the strating position and repeat. Most experts will agree this is the best exercise in building the thickness of one’s back.

Modifications for this exercise include a negative and jumping pull up. Utilizing a bench or plyo box for assistance, a negative pull up is performed by jumping so that the chin is above the bar and controlling the descent of the movement until the arms are fully extended. The more time that is taken to control the descent, the more muscle fiber is recruited. Another modification includes performing the pull up by jumping up with hands on the bar, lifting the chin above the bar and returning to the start position. As one begins to strengthen his or her back, performing this exercise in this manner will help create the muscle memory and strength to progress to a pull up without modifications.

The pull up movement is a key component of the Timed Exercise Fitness System. Timed Exercise is a revolutionary exercise program designed to improve the fitness of any committed individual in less than 30 minutes a day. The program combines body and free weight movements to create a high intensity workout designed for each individual to train at his or her maximum level of effort.
