Knowing the Lalique Vase
A genuine Lalique vase is an antique piece of glass that is adored by art lovers even today. It was made by a man called Rene Lalique who started his career as a freelance jeweler in 1881. He turned his jeweler’s eye into making vases, bowls, perfume bottles and decanters because of his attraction to three dimensional decorative items.
Typically, the designs that had made Lalique glass famous used images of foliage, animals or both, which he makes by pressing glass into molds. Later in his career, Lalique also made tableware, stemware, lamps and clocks.
A Lalique vase may date back to the 1920s, when Lalique began producing a number of unique and limited edition vases, after being forced to stop working by the First World War. Some of these vases are adorned with reliefs of lovebirds and parakeet pairs, which is a motif that he continued to use throughout his illustrious career. He is not limited to it though as some of his works feature intricately designed wasps.
It was also during this period that his Courges vases appeared. These are rare works of art that are saturated with color, and contrasted with the majority of Lalique glass works which are opalescent and pearly. The different colors were produced by adding metal oxides into glass. Adding cobalt results to a blue color, uranium can yield yellow while chromium produces red colored glass.
There are plenty of Lalique crystal vases that are being sold on the market today but before going out to buy one, you should know that fake Lalique items can be found even in antique shops and flea markets. Although there are people who may have found genuine items from such sources, it is best if you could get yours from reputable sellers, such as a Lalique authorized dealer.
