Encourage your child in math

All moms and dads want to see his or her kid achieve success in life. Whatever measuring stick use to measure success, academics are probably part of your definition. Mathematical skill is a big part of that. It doesn’t matter if she wants to be a pilot, an architect, a computer programmer, or simply attend a good school, math know-how would be a piece of his goals. Happily, there are scores of methods you can use to make math an entertaining and lively subject to learn. If you start when a child is young and make knowledgeable decisions about activities, she can grow up to discover math is interesting and not dry. They won’t even be aware they are learning. Here are a few areas to think of when you are planning to help your child in mathematics.

A fantastic way for students of every age to learn math is through games. Virtually every child games, there are a serious number of math games available on computers. Some are as basic as drill and practice, others are much more nuancedfar more sophisticated. Starting with the beginning early 386 days to modern advanced PC’s, tablets, and iphones, students have always jumped at the chance to play computer math games. There are also many traditional options too. Consider games such as bridge and Yahtzee. Not only do these games build beginning arithmetic skills, they build higher level skills in areas like probability. Even simple strategy games like nim and Connect 4 will help your child build a base towards sophisticated thinking. It’s nothing like the days of the slide rule.

While you may not consider them at first, puzzles can also be an additional good method to promote logic and reasoning. Math isn’t just about arithmetic. There are crucial logical reasoning skills to master, and puzzles are a fun way to do that. The Towers of Hanoi is a famous example of a visual thinking puzzle. Tessellations are fantastic for teaching geometric thinking. Don’t make the mistake of believing that your child needs to do nothing but learn working with numbers to be learning math. As students move into into advanced mathematics, numerical reasoning becomes less significant, and the logical reasoning of puzzles will be emphasized.

Finally, a last idea for encouraging mathematical logic to your child in an entertaining way is with workbooks. Don’t look for a boring workbook that is only repetitive arithmetic. Go to the workbook part of your local bookstore, and you will find a ridiculous number of choices. Logic books offer a “solve the myster” puzzle to solve using a limited number of clues. Many workbooks have solutions written in invisible ink for students to reveal with a marker. And again, many workbooks are written in game form, making them attention grabbers for children.

To sum up, like it or not, success in mathematics will play a major function in your child’s future emplyoment and college plans. That’s a good thing. There are a number of ways to advance your child whether you consider them naturally talented in math or not. Probably the most important thing is to start before they get too far behind.
