Seventh gen Passat comes calling
The luxury sedan segment is in news again and this time the news is coming from Volkswagen’s stable. The seventh generation Volkswagen Passat is all set to be unveiled on March 29 as per reports in the media. The new Passat will be available with a number of new features both under the hood and cosmetic. The new Passat will come loaded with a 2.0 TDI diesel and a1.8 TSI petrol units. Neither of the engines is new but the 2.0 TDI diesel has been retuned to belt out 170bhp, which is a good 32bhp more than the one available now. With the new Passat you will get to choose from a manual or DSG gearbox.
On the outside you will find some subtle changes to the outer look of the car. A fresh aggressive front grille, new headlight design, use of chrome and a different looking rear due to new tail-lamps are some of the most striking changes you will notice in the new Passat. The new Passat retains the interior look more or less with its wide horizontally split dash and inset instrument dials. As expected of a Volkswagen car the interior is rich and built of good material. The touch of chrome also adds to the upmarket feel of the car.As for the overall dimensions the new Passat is four millimetres longer but has the same width and height as the current generation car. It has completely new body panels.
The Passat offered in the European market comes with a number of sophisticated safety and luxury features. But the Indian model is likely to lack some of them and the price of the new Passat is likely to be higher than the outgoing one.At present the Volkswagen Passat available in India comes with a 1.8L petrol engine. The slick-shifting six speed manual gearbox helps achieve a good mileage which results in a good performance. The 1.8 L, 1798cc advanced technology engine offers a maximum power of 160PS at 4500-6200 rpm and maximum torque of 250Nm at 1500-4500rpm. The crosses the 100 kmph mark in just 8.6 seconds and touches a top speed of 220 kmph. It delivers a mileage of 11.5 kmpl in the city and 13 kmpl on the highways.
