The first Jaguar V8
The Jaguar XK range which includes the XK8 and XKR is a prestige luxury grand tourer, it has been built by the British car maker since 1996 when it replaced the ageing XJS. Ever since its inception it has been available as a coupe and convertible. The XK8 was then first model to utilise Jaguar’s 8 cylinder AJ-V8 engine.
The first generation XK series was available with either a naturally aspirated or supercharged 4.0 litre power unit that produced 290bhp. Along with the Aston Martin DB7 the XK was based on its predecessor the XJS – although heavy modifications were made. Both the XK8 and XKR produce phenomenal performance figures, they were both electronically restricted to 155mph. The XK8 can do 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds; the XKR can do it in 5.2 seconds.
The current model of the Jaguar XK in Chichester has been around since 2006, like the previous model it is available as a coupe or a convertible. It is available with two engine options a 380bhp 5.0 litre V8 and a 503bhp supercharged V8, both the engines utilise Jaguar’s six speed automatic gearbox. The 380bhp model can do 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds and the 503bhp model can do it in 4.5 seconds, both engines provide staggering performance.
Being a grand tourer the XK handles very well even on the larger 19 and 20 inch wheels, it changes direction quickly and grips the road like a sports car. The weight on the steering is perfect, providing enough feedback to give the driver a feel for the road.
Inside, the Jaguar XK is very luxurious, it feels as though it has been put together by hand. The noise of the V8 engine is immense and puts a shiver down your spine; it disappears at cruising speeds leaving a tranquil and peaceful whooshing noise.
