A new high performance Jaguar

The Jaguar XJ series is renowned for not changing its basic design and style over a period of 42 years, the original body mould has been carried over ever since its inception in 1968. The 2010 Jaguar XJ has literally broken out of the mould, it looks like a completely different car. The new XJ is longer, wider and looks much bigger than its predecessor.

The front of the new XJ resembles the executive Jaguar XF but with slimmer sleeker front headlights and a larger square grill. Jaguar’s new design philosophy is highlighted in the rear end design; it has upright swooping rear light clusters nicknamed “cat’s claws’”. It also has black roof panels on either side of the rear screen to give it a narrower appearance.

Engine wise the Jaguar XJ is available with a choice of 2 petrol engines and 1 diesel. The petrol models are based on the 5.0 litre unit, available with or without a supercharger. The naturally aspirated model has 385ps while the supercharged model has a whooping 510ps. The diesel model has a twin turbo powered 3.0 litre diesel engine which produces an impressive 275ps. Jaguar has predicted that the diesel model will the most popular due to its running costs and efficient fuel consumption.

There have been rumours in the motoring press that a high performance version of the XJ is on the cards, the XJR. Jaguar unveiled a high-performance concept car version of the luxury XJ at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. The model on show was finished in pearlescent white, it had new front, side and rear sills, darkened exterior body trim – rather than the bright chrome on the XJ – and black 22-inch wheels.

The new Jaguar XJR in Chester will have to be more powerful than the 510ps produced by the supercharged model currently in production. Jaguar will have to work hard on retuning the engine to produce more in the range of 600bhp to really entice people.
