The Mercedes Benz C Class is the German car manufacturer’s compact executive saloon, in the US it is the entry level Mercedes, where as in the UK it is third in the model line up after the A Class and B Class models. The C Class was introduced in 1993 to replace the outgoing Mercedes 190 model, since then the C Class platform has been used for several model derivatives including the CLC Class and the CLK Class.
The first model of the C Class still resembled the 190, it was still quite square with lines smoothed over and corners rounded off. It was very successful with high end car buyers looking for a small executive saloon. The first generation C Class remained the smallest Mercedes model until the A Class was introduced in 1997.
The second generation C Class was introduced in 2000; it moved away significantly from the 190 and 1st generation C Class design. It has a much sportier look with a longer steeping front end and a shorter rear. It also lost the square headlights, replaced by an oddly shaped round and oval design – resembling the S Class. The second generation is available with a choice of 15 engines including 5 diesels; the top end C55 AMG has a 5.2 litre V8 engine producing 362bhp.
The latest generation C Class was introduced in 2007, Mercedes made the new model longer and wider. The design inspirations were taken from the new S Class which meant the oddly shaped headlights were replaced by a more conventional design. In 2011 the C Class got a facelift to keep it fresh and aligned with Mercedes’ new front end design.
The new Mercedes Benz C Class in York is currently available with 13 engines, 6 of which are diesels. Mercedes has introduced new BlueEFFICIENCY engines which are much more fuel efficient and are friendlier to the environment.
