Do You Know Repair Or Replace A Car’s Dashboard?
When working on any old car, you will probably have to repair or change the dashboard as part of a custom auto interior upgrade. It is one part of each vehicle which gets too much abuse either from the sun coming through the windscreen or hot air from the heater. This could result into cracking in the surface and depending on how severe the damage is you may have to change the complete dash instead of merely repair the cracks. If you have a friend to assist, it will make life much easier.
Before you complete any custom auto interior work on a car, you should always disconnect the battery. You do not wish for any nasty accidents. You will then have to remove everything you are able to i.e. the steering wheel, glove box, instrument cluster and any screws you can see. Go slowly and cautiously when removing the dashboard since it may still be connected to some screws you failed tosee. Taking care not to spoil anything now will make your task easier in the long run. A flathead screwdriver will aid you to complete the job.
You will have to remove the VIN label (vehicle identification number) from the old dash since it should be displayed on the new one. Fit the new piece into the car by reusing the existing brackets and screws. You might require some new ones if the old ones are ruined.
Refit the parts you removed earlier i.e. the instrument box and steering wheel. Ultimately, re-connect the battery to ensure everything works properly i.e. lights, radio etc.
If there are just small cracks, you might not have to replace the entire dashboard. You may be capable to repair the present one using a special kit. You will have to paint over the entire surface when you have finished but to be true this method merely works on very smaller cracks.
Although it seem like more work it is often easier to merely replace the dashboard as compared to try and repair it when performing custom auto interior work.
