If the dipstick does not indicate ‘FULL” then you must top it up. On the other hand, if the oil is black or dark brown, then you have to change it. If it is brown, then it is still good. Place the transmission shifter in “P” (that is, parking) spot and allow the engine to be inactive. Remove the transmission dipstick and clean it with a rag. Put it back. Then remove it again to check the level of fluid. A cold engine will be indicated around the “cold” mark. A warm engine would be around the “Hot” mark. If it falls within the hot mark, then it is advisable to top the fluid up.
Also look out for your engine coolant. Always make sure that your coolant level is within the low and full mark in the overflow tank of the coolant. A low coolant level usually causes overheating and this can damage your engine. If you discover that it is low; then top the coolant.
