There’s certainly a lot to like in The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman — jealousy, lust, revenge, vintage kung fu clips and epic combat. This is like a breath of fresh air, even if much of it was previously exhaled by the likes of Takashi Miike in Japan or seems similar to a Stephen Chow film.

Doug Limon is credited as a producer, and not just on the English poster similar to “Quentin Tarantino presents Hero” but within the opening Chinese credits. Not sure how the Bourne Identity director got mixed up in this but I am glad he did. Films like these only goes to show how far behind the curve the West still is in grasping the rapid evolution of Greater Chinese film-making. Thumbs up.

Chinese martial arts action-comedy that revolves around three interconnecting stories of desire, vengeance and greed. Executive produced by The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman.

The story of The Butcher, The Chef and The Swordsman is split into three inter-twining tales all connected by the protagonists ownership of a mystical cursed blade. In the first story, a butcher swears vengeance against the man who buys the madame he’s in lust with at the local brothel, in the second story a chef’s life rests on the outcome of his preparation of an incredibly difficult eight-course meal and the final story sees a swordsman trying to break out of the shadow of his legendary father’s legacy.

Screening up at the Toronto Film Festival next month is a new kung fu comedy in the same vein as Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle called The Butcher, The Chef and The Swordsman from Chinese filmmaker Wu Ershan. I’m not exactly sure why, but Doug Liman is presenting the film at the festival and Twitch now has an official trailer from TIFF which you can check out below. This actually looks a lot more like a bloody, awesome, stylized martial arts movie than it does a kung fu comedy, but I’m in either way. It looks like we’ll get three vignettes for each of the different stories, too. This looks good, I really want to see it! Watch below.

The Butcher, The Chef and The Swordsman is directed by Chinese filmmaker Wu Ershan (who I can’t seem to find on IMDb) who studied at the Beijing Institute of Film Studies. The screenplay was written by Zhang Jiajia, Tang Que, Ma Luoshan & Wu Ershan. It’s based on the short story “Legend of the Kitchen Knife” by An Changhe. This will be presented by Doug Liman at the Toronto Film Festival next month, where it will be looking for a US distributor. We’ll keep you updated and let you know what we think once we get to catch it! [ watch The Butcher the Chef and the Swordsman online ]
