Old Tucson Studios
Located at 201 S. Kinney Road in Tucson Arizona, is a little piece of movie history that is often ignored. Yet, if the area could talk, you would surely listen. This is not because it would be rather odd to hear buildings and dirt talk, instead it is due to the importance of what happened here. During its time, Old Tucson Studios’ set has appeared in more than 300 movie and television shows. Perhaps you will be familiar with a few of them: John Wayne- Rio Bravo, McClintock, Rio Lobo, and El Dorado, Sharon Stone- The Quick and the Dead, Chevy Chase- Three Amigos. All of these productions have some connection with Old Tucson Studios which makes the area a significant historical land mark for any movie lover. The Studios date back to 1939, and were quite active for some time. Yet, recently, less and less production companies use the area, instead opting for more sheltered locations.
I first heard of Old Tucson Studios at one of the hotels in Tucson that I as staying at. Having seen many movies in my day, I decided to take a tour of the area. While the information that was provided during the tour was similar to that Tucson hotels provide, you truly appreciate the facts while you are standing in the presence of such a significant part of history. Now, I am not sure if the tour company distributes pamphlets to hotels in Tucson, or if I ran across one by chance. Yet, I do know that Tucson hotels should start placing them in all of their lobbies. This tour was well worth my time, and I suggest it for anyone that is visiting Tucson. If you are a movie buff, or someone that just has a few extra hours in Tucson, I think you would truly enjoy the Old Tucson Studios.
