Fluorescents in Diamonds
Over the years there has been a hot debate about fluorescents in diamonds. While some people believe it is a negative attribute to this precious gem, others see it as quite the opposite.
In 1997, a study by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) was conducted to discover if fluorescents in diamonds made any real difference to the colour of the stone itself. The study consisted of taking a collection of comparable diamonds (in grading, with varying degrees of fluorescence) and having them reviewed by a group of relevant people. This group of people were made up of trained diamond graders, industry professionals (e.g. jewellers), and consumers (the general jewellery buying public). The consumers that reviewed the diamonds could not recognise any adverse effects of the diamonds colour that also had strong degrees of fluorescence. Funnily enough, the diamond graders and industry professionals could not agree on the differences that they saw in each stone.
Basically, the study showed that fluorescence present in diamonds has no significant impact on the transparency of the gem.
What Exactly is Fluorescents?
Caused by trace impurities, fluorescents in diamonds usually throw colours of blue, but also white, yellow, green, and orange. In some rare instances, red can also be seen.
In the aforementioned study, those who reviewed diamonds with a strong presence of blue fluorescents seemed to have a better appearance in colour (less yellow, closer to white). Many jewellers tend to think that if a diamond exhibits high levels of this special trait, they will often charge less for the diamond as they believe the real colour of the diamond is of a lesser quality.
In reality, there will always be a strong debate over whether diamonds exhibiting strong fluorescents deserve a higher or lower price tag. When choosing a diamond, it is a very personal decision, not to mention costly! The best way to decipher the myths of fluorescents is to research diamonds thoroughly, shop around, compare prices, stick to a budget and choose a stone that you (or more importantly, your partner) will love.
All in all, proposing to a loved one is a huge step in any relationship and shouldn’t be overshadowed by something as beautiful as the stunning colours a diamond can show in sunlight!
