The New Thunderbolt port – data at its fastest

Remember the old floppy disks? At the height of their use, they allowed you to store just 1.44 MB of data. Meanwhile, computers used to have just a mere 8 MB of memory and that seemed like a lot! These days, a simple PowerPoint can take up to 16 MB of space on its own.

Most of the latest computers now come with around 500 GB worth of internal memory with plenty of opportunities to expand. Both internal and external hard drives now come in sizes as large as 6 terabytes (that’s 6,000,000,000,000 bytes or 6,000 GB) – so you won’t be short on space for even the largest HD movie files.

Uploading large files with the new Thunderbolt port

Meanwhile, as storage size gets larger, the technology to effectively transfer these sizable files is changing. The old USB 1.0 port moved files at a mere speed of just 1.5 Mbits/second, these were eventually replaced by that faster Firewire (400 Mbits/second) and now the standard is USB 2.0 (480 Mbits/second) for most connections. Meanwhile, new technology include Firewire 800 (800 Mbits/second) and USB 3.0 SuperSpeed (5GB/second) and has been incorporated into some of the latest laptops and notebooks on the market.

Now, there’s even more advances – the Apple MacBook Pro includes even faster file transfer capabilities. The new Thunderbolt port, a joint project of Intel and Apple, the has input/output speeds of up to 10 GB/second, that’s 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and twice as fast as the current speeds of USB 3.0 devices. Released in the latest range of MacBook Pros, the port takes the MacBook Pro from a portable laptop to a professional video editor.

Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort in Apple for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI and VGA displays, so users can start plugging in their standard devices straight away. Apple expects Thunderbolt to be widely adopted as a new standard for high performance I/O.
