Plan your dining room before you get your dining furniture

You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes for a child without measuring their feet to ensure they are the correct fit. You wouldn’t buy a massive king size bed for a tiny single bedroom, so don’t buy your dining furniture without some basic measuring and sizing first.

You know how it is, you see the table you have dreamt of with those leather clad dining chairs in soft cream. You want them, you have to have them. However you don’t want a costly mistake on your hands with the wrong size for your room. Even if you have a separate dining room, you need to be careful not to over fill it with a huge table or wrong size dining furniture. Yes, if you have the space then you can indulge and buy a table the size of a snooker table, but most of us don’t have that kind of space available. Many homes now have a kitchen dining space so the size of the table and chairs is hugely important.

Your dining table and chairs is important, but so is storage and indeed accessories. dining furniture can encompass sideboards, side tables, dressers, wine racks and even TV units. It’s important not to over stuff a room with furniture as it can make it feel oppressive and overpowering rather than welcoming and cosy, which is probably what you would prefer. If you use your dining table for entertaining then you want something large enough to sit a few people, but not so large that you can’t pass when people are sitting at the table. Empty rooms look much bigger than they are so do beware, as it can be very deceiving.

There are several ways you could plan your dining space and not make a mistake with the sizing of the dining furniture. A scale drawing of the room can help, and you can do this simply enough with a bit of graph paper. Mark out where windows, doors and radiators or heaters are. You also need to mark out any electrical sockets, all of these things actually mean the space you have in the room is less than you think, as you have to allow for them either for access or for blocking them. Once you have your room marked out on paper then cut out shapes to represent the table, chairs, bookcases, sideboards or wine racks you want in there.

If the scale drawing of your room seems like it won’t give you the real perspective you need for the sizing of your dining furniture then you could go another way. Get the dimensions of the furniture you want to buy and make life size cut outs that can be placed on the floor of the room. You won’t get the 3D impression but you will get a good idea of the size and dimension of the furniture you are about to buy. Even just simply measuring your room and knowing the size of the furniture you want is a big step in the right direction of choosing the right size dining furniture.

Once you have an idea of the biggest table and other furniture you can comfortably accommodate in the room you can go and shop. Contemporary, reproduction, glass and steel or solid wood, painted or waxed finishes, the choice for your furniture is yours and there is a wealth of choice out there. If you spend a lot of time at your dining furniture then you want to spend a little more money on it. With your planning and measuring done, you can now get on with the fun part of choosing exactly what you want for your room.
