Warren G and Snoop Dogg Pay Tribute to Nate Dogg at South By Southwest 2011
Just moments before going on stage for paying his tribute to late rapper Nate Dog, Warren G addressed the MTV News cameras and with genuine sincerity said, “I honestly don’t know how this is going to turn out.” The upset G was still coming to terms with the sad demise of his friend and colleague Nate, who died last Tuesday due to stroke-related problems.
His tribute depiction at the South by Southwest music event was also echoed by other musicians and DJs who played Nate’s collections all night long. Every person to grace the stage highlighted Nate’s legacy in their own ways, but it was the deadly group of Warren, Kurupt and Daz Dillinger who took the show to its climax and had the finals say of the festival.
So when G had said those words in front of the MTV News cameras, he was right as the show grew itself during the night, without any planned direction and that feeling of not knowing what to expect, really made the night memorable.
An hour after Warren took to the stage, with the crowd still high from the Snoop Dogg’s ‘Real Soon’ featuring Nate on the chorus, some may have idea that the ‘Lay Low’-rapper may have left an incomplete legacy, but that’s not the case. This was a fact well known among every performer on the night, and consequently the theme set for the event was not the usual mourning-tribute one. Instead it was more of a celebration of the late rapper’s vocation and life.
Dillinger and Kurupt were the ones who set this tone by smoking cannabis joints, even if with teary eyes during their depiction of ‘Who Ride Wit Us.’ As expected, the audience became possessed by the spell casted by the duo. Like that wasn’t enough, Snoop emerged a few minutes later, puffing blunt smoke and the trio executed ‘Let’s Play House’ with perfection.
After that, Warren re-entered and the quartet set in motion into Snoop’s ‘Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None),’ which featured some of Nate’s finest works. Warren followed it up with a solo track ‘This D.J.’ and then the four MCs then combined again for spitting ‘Whistle While You Hustle.’
The classic-spree didn’t end there. In fact it was just the start, as the next in line were ‘New York, New York’ and ‘For All My N—az & Bitches’ and when the things were in full flow, they dropped Nate’s finest ‘Regulate’ and ‘The Next Episode,’ in the middle of which, Snoop looked at the sky and exhaled a massive cloud of smoke, as if to say, ‘This one is for you my friend.’ The crazy night was brought to an end with ‘Hey, hey, hey, hey/ Smoke weed every day,’ sang by everyone in attendance at the jam-packed Venue 222.
Such a high-class function was a fitting tribute to Nate Dogg- an artist, whose soulful voice sold millions of albums throughout the world.
