Influencing Skills: The Real Deal in Leadership Training
Influence is a big word at the moment, in circles that promote leadership training courses. A more organic way of doing business, and of encouraging people to fulfil their potential in any number of given scenarios, influencing skills are now seen as the vital new tool in the ongoing battle to maximise your personal success and the success of the company you run or work for. Influencing can be applied to real world sales situations, for example, gathering a marked increase in sales percentages for a product or organisation.
Like any new tool, there are as many imitations of the real thing as there are genuinely helpful influencing training courses. Sorting out the real deal in leadership training from those courses that purport to deliver but can’t quite make the grade can be pretty hard. You don’t know until you go, as they say – and of course if you have nothing to compare the influencing skills course you are on with, then it is very hard for you to work out just how effective it really is.
There are, fortunately, a few simple rules that allow you to determine the likely to be successful leadership training courses from those that just pretend to carry the torch.
The first thing you should be aware of is the difference between face to face contact and learning by proxy. While it is true that any skill can be taught in part without the physical presence of a teacher, no skill worth having can be acquired completely on your own. Influencing skills “courses” that offer you the insights and the successes you are after from an entirely correspondent basis are not to be trusted.
The apparent size and intensity of the group or course you are looking to join should be taken into consideration too. Influence based leadership training is about inspiration and enthusiasm. It’s very difficult to get either of these in large sized groups. Massive seminars and tutorials, unless they are operated in such a way that the group receives the attention it needs from a number of influencing skills masters, rather than just one, should be avoided.
The basic tenets of influencing revolve around a cross disciplinary approach to the study of life. In simple terms, influencing is a philosophical approach to the business of getting what you want out of life, drawing from any area of human knowledge and/or experience that is relevant to the quest. As such, leadership training that uses the idea of influence as its core is all about making new connections and seeing how diverse branches of human endeavour actually dovetail to form dynamic and successful world views.
Unlike its fellow leadership and business training platforms, the idea of influencing skills is as much about making people happy as it is about achieving personal success. An influencing master will tell you that he or she gets as much enjoyment from passing on success to others as he or she does from enjoying success of his or her own. As such, influencing is an organic and forward moving approach to bringing your goals to life.
