Employees of the Month – Keeping your employees happy
You probably already know that your employees are the heart and soul of your company. If you don’t, you should at least pay attention to some recent reports which emphasise more than ever the importance of employee retention and worker satisfaction.
Finance recruiting firm Robert Half’s recent survey of 345 Australian finance, accounting and human resources professionals found that just over half of employees would quit if they had a conflict with their manager, and 42 per cent would quit if they thought another company had a better management system.
These statistics are also relevant to other industries and businesses as well. Without employees, your business would not likely be as successful, so part of your job as a business owner is to ensure that your employees remain healthy and happy in the work place, and maintain a productive environment in which everyone can collaborate and learn from each other.
Make them feel valuable – Good employees are what make a business, so make them feel like valued members of the team – because they ARE. Positive feedback and giving them responsibilities that are challenging but manageable will reinforce their sense of importance within the company and motivate them to achieve more, whatever their role.
Speak to them – Find out your employee concerns, and how you can address them. Hold regular meetings with staff members to discuss what’s going on in their daily work days, anything they may need help with and any suggestions they may have for the business. Creating a more open, collaborative environment will help everyone feel more relaxed and supportive of each other.
Be organised – If you’re organised, the rest of your business and employees will be too. If your employees see you as confident with the businesses they’ll feel more secure about their jobs and will be more willing to work hard to achieve a common goal. Make sure your working conditions are appropriate as well. If you have a rapidly growing business and are still working from home, consider looking for some office space for lease.
Make employee satisfaction a priority, and you’ll see the benefits for your business as a whole. Whether it involves looking for offices for sale so you have more space, buying a new coffee machine for the office kitchen, or simply having more of a chat to the people who work for you, taking action to ensure worker satisfaction will mean you and your employees will be healthy, happy and productive.
