USB Stick Camera for Security

Besides the IP cameras and the CCTV cameras you also have cheaper alternatives which are ideal for a small business security system or a home security system and one of them is the USB stick camera. Even though the USB camera is reliable and quick, the quality of images that you get is not all that good and such cameras are often used as web cameras. But if the quality of the images is not important for you then the USB cameras can be used to setup a cheap security system which could prove to be very useful.

There are plenty of advantages of opting for an USB camera. The most obvious one is that the USB stick camera is easily available and most people might already be having it. A lot of people use the USB camera while chatting with family or friends on Yahoo messenger or other Netmeeting kind of applications. So you can make use of this same camera along with some specialized surveillance software and your security system is ready. You do not need to get any new hardware. Besides, you can get some really nice software packages like Zoneminder for free. This kind of software normally has in-built video recording which is triggered by some motion. Besides, it also has a pretty decent security archive management.

Again, if you do not already own a USB stick camera there is no need to worry. They are very affordable and you can easily buy one for as little as $10. Of course, these are not the best ones and the lower priced ones will not have a good image quality but if image quality is not that important and if you just want to monitor your office or home then you can opt for this or choose from the more expensive models depending on your budget. But then you must bear in mind that under low light conditions, even the most expensive USB camera with better resolution will not perform very well.

One of the disadvantages of making use of the USB camera is that cabling is required to be done. The USB stick camera works only with USB cables and hence they are limited by the length of the cable which might be a few meters long at the most. Hence you will need to keep the camera as close to the PC as possible.

Another thing to note is that if you are looking to use the USB stick camera as a spy camera then it will not work without the necessary software installed on a PC as compared to the normal IP cameras or CCTV cameras which you can get working by plugging them into a VCR or a monitor. But if you require an entry point security system without requiring high quality images then you will find that the USB camera along with a PC is the ideal cost effective solution for you.
