Socks come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and uses. Are you wearing the right ones?
Socks are a part of our everyday lives. Not something most of us usually pay much attention to, since they are always there. We take them for granted if you will. Socks have been around for thousands of years, but in the most recent past we have taken great strides to make socks work for us, no matter our activity. Running socks for example are much different than dress socks and if either is mistaken for the other, you can end up in a world of hurt after a jog or sprint around the neighborhood. Socks should vary dependent upon what their particular use is.
Your foot is the single heaviest producer of perspiration on the body. Both feet are, actually. They are each able to produce over a pint of sweat per day. Wearing foot gear that helps maintain the dryness you need and keep your foot at the right temperature is imperative to working out. Wearing too thin of a sock can make it hard for the moisture to be drawn out and away from the body. Wearing too thick athletic socks can make it unnecessarily difficult to regulate temperature and evaporation. Over-heating can result in even more sweat ending in dehydration. Under-heating can result in a chill and possible frostbite dependent upon outside factors. The right sock is essential to the right body maintenance.
For the lower end of the spectrum of fitness, walking socks can be just as important as any other type of sock for all of the other types of workout regimens. Even though you may feel that taking a leisurely stroll through the park is not all that intense, your heart rate will increase, circulation will expand, your lungs will work harder, and your endorphins will kick in. All in all, walking is a wonderful exercise. Unless you are wearing the wrong socks and come away blistered and possibly bloody. Wearing the same socks you wore to work can result in dampness you don’t need and possible slipping inside of your shoe causing awful aches and pains, not to mention the probability of a fall. Maintaining your health is the reason you started walking in the first place. Do not let it become a hazard to your health.
For those of you working in a freezing climate, you understand the risks of not having the right foot gear. Over 80% of all frostbite cases can be attributed to wearing the wrong socks. Do not become a victim of your own ignorance over the importance of keeping your feet well cared for. There are many different brands and services offered for the particular group of people needing warmth and dryness, or else risk their lives. You would never work in the freezing temperatures without the right head gear or hand warmers, or coats. Why would you take your feet for granted and risk losing them? They are your livelihood. Be good to them.
Socks are an integral part of our lives. We should make them a priority.
