Mobile Application Market – Today and Future
Mobile applications – those words sounds really rarely just a few years ago, because the amount was too pure to notice. At that time no one could think about their distribution via one service. Today the situation has completely overturned. Now we may choose from among 350 thousand of applications for different smartphones. The way of apps distribution is common for all developers – mobile application shop. It was once created by Apple and now copied by other mobile platforms developers.
The market is large, but it is still too early to admit saturation of mobile applications market. A few months’ ago Forrester Research analysts have predicted that revenues from mobile apps sales in 2011 will reach $ 15 billion. In March the forecasted revenue by 2015 reach $ 38 billion! Profit will be generated by smartphones owners and also by tablet users mostly. The part of tablet applications selling will be equal to $ 8 billion (1/5 of all income in 2015). For comparison, in 2010 the tablet market share was evaluated in $ 0.3 billion.
The rapid development of the sector is provoked by the changes in smartphones, fast and qualitative. One of the evidence is appearance of 4G – high-speed data network. The technology will allow smartphone users to view high quality video, using NFC sensors and so on.
What are the most popular mobile apps today? According to data, gathered in November 2009, TOP apps for smartphones are games, applications for travel and navigation and photo apps. The information is takken from the survey, conducted by Vanson Bourne for Samsung Electronics Inc.
According to analytic, games are the most popular among women: 70% of them admitted playing games in their smartphones, at the same time the rate was 57% among men.
Programs for creating and processing photos are also mostly used by women (70%), much more than by men (49%).
Apps that allow getting inquiry information or advice among men and women are more demanded than applications for social networks (39%).
Among the most desirable mobile applications there are: programs for navigation and travel (34% respondents would like to try them), photo apps (12% of respondents), applications for work (11%) and shopping (9%).
In General demand on mobile applications among consumer is high: almost half of the smartphones holders (42%) would pay for applications, if such an opportunity will be given. 54% of these users have expressed willingness to pay 5 euros per app and 13% – up to 10 euros.
43% of smartphone’s owners, who have had app downloading experience before, lost interest in it very quickly, so almost half of the applications in a short time became useless. The conclusion is – existing mobile applications do not meet real life requirements.
Jose Lee, the executive vice president and head of multimedia solutions in Samsung Electronics gave his comments about the research results – “Research shows that the mobile application market has huge potential but due to unrealized demand, developers and application providers can expect higher incomes. The survey results confirm that this market is at an early stage of development.”
Talking about smartphones market, the most popular platform today is iPhone, Android is abruptly gathering popularity. Therefore iPhone development is the most wanted service in the sphere and iPhone developer stays among the most demanded workers in IT-industry.
