One thing the emergency vehicles need is LED strobes.
On approaching a scene of a roadside accident, you will notice many things going on. One thing you will notice about all of the vehicles in attendance is many will have LED strobes.
An accident on the highway is a terrible thing to come across, flashing lights, sirens, fire, police and medical personnel in attendance. We don’t want to see this kind of thing on our roads, but sadly, it is an all too common occurrence. You may see many traffic markers telling you where to go. You may see light boards with a recommended speed limit. Something with so much going on will have to be a major incident with injuries and possible fatalities. This paints a pretty bleak picture but it would be so much worse without the use of warning lights such as LED strobes.
Many states have rules and regulations for departments attending such incidents at the roadside and all of them have one thing in common, maintaining safety. Other than the LED strobe lights, you will see the personnel will be in high visibility apparel, vehicles may be parked to protect the scene and there will be traffic advisors on vehicles or on boards. Safety at roadside scenes has come into sharp focus in recent years due to the deaths and injuries of emergency personnel at such scenes. New methods of vehicle placement and lights and siren use have been discussed and document over the last few years.
All the things that can happen at an emergency roadside incident should be prepared for and all departments involved should have policies to cover all eventualities. The use of lights at roadsides especially at night has come into question with some arguing they can distract drivers rather than advise and warn them. Regardless of what your state rules are you will likely see LED strobe lights at a scene. The strobe light is a highly effective emergency light and although it has been in use for over 80 years it is only recently that LED strobes have been manufactured in any quantity. Something that has been effectively used for over an 80-year period has to be effective.
At roadside incidents and accidents, the emergency personnel will be well versed in how to deal with any situation they come across. Although in the past some emergency personnel were not trained specifically to deal with road traffic accidents, they spent so much of their time in attendance it became a necessity. The incidents of deaths of fire department personnel is nearly as high at roadside attendance as it is firefighting, which seems very high. The increased risk of roadside injury or death to emergency service personnel can be reduced with the right warning systems in place such as the LED strobes and lightbars.
At any incident on our roads or highways, you will have a mix of the following agencies, fire service, emergency medical services, recovery operations and medical examiners. Along with those you will likely find local, county and/or state law enforcement agencies and local, county and or state highway or transportation officials. That is potentially many personnel at a roadside and maintaining their safety is of paramount importance. Without all of the correct equipment, warnings, apparel and crucially lighting like the LED strobes at the scene fatalities would increase and that is unacceptable.
