General Rules for Horse Riding Safety

Although it looks absolutely peaceful and relaxing, riding a horse can actually be a very dangerous sport. Riders need to be well versed in horse riding safety in order to ensure both they and the horse are safe throughout the duration of the ride.

Start Off Safely
The first rule to remember is never to ride a horse that is beyond your current skill level. It may seem challenging and exciting, but a horse is an extremely powerful animal and not to be underestimated. If you are taking lessons or visiting stables for the first time, let the handler know your current riding level and let them choose an appropriate horse for you.

Always wear a helmet while riding, one that is designed for horse riding. It needs to be certified by ASTM/SEI and fitted properly. It’s also important that you have proper stirrups and boots that will fit well into those stirrups.

Ride Safely
While you’re riding, it’s important that you stay aware of your surroundings. Horse riding safety involves being aware of the dangers and reacting appropriately to them as they arise. Keep your eyes open and be on the watch for hazards around you.

If it’s possible, try not to ride alone. If you must, be sure to stay on the path or road and keep a mobile phone with you in case of emergencies. Don’t use your cell phone while riding though, it can scare the horse and distract the rider.

Riding with other people requires a few safety rules as well. Keep a horse-length between you and the rider ahead and try to follow whoever knows the way. When riding along the road be sure to keep left and allow the more experienced rider to stay closest to the traffic.

Check the Horse and the Riding Equipment
As you are riding be sure to check the girth of the saddle and harnesses frequently. Don’t tighten it all the way at first, but check it as soon as you are away from the barn and again a short way down the path or road. The girth should be tightened to the point where the saddle will not slip, but not tight enough to constrict the horse’s breathing.

New riders and experienced ones can always use a refresher in horse riding safety rules. This will help them to have a more enjoyable ride and help to cut down on injuries and accidents to both the rider and the horse.
