Why larder fridges are making big inroads into the market
Trends go around in circles. What is fashionable one year can soon disappear from the market, only to be revived some time later when their enduring features are appreciated, on when they can be repackaged to appeal to a completely different market.
This is what has happened in the case of larder fridges and American fridge freezers. These super-sized kitchen appliances first arrived on the scene after the Second World War, when every American home needed the capacity to cool, freeze and store large amounts of food and drinks, in order to keep them safe during long spells of hot weather.
In those days, a trip to the supermarket was often something which could only be undertaken every fortnight or so, simply because of the distance involved. So families would stock up on large quantities of essentials, and enough other items to tide them over, so that in between these shopping expeditions they only needed to buy day-to-day essentials from their local store.
In a relatively small country such as the United Kingdom, there was never as much need to keep such large quantities of food at home at any one time. But we have seen the death of many of our corner shops in recent years, and the pattern of us doing fewer, larger shops is starting to take hold.
Another trend which is helping the growth in the American fridge freezer market is that towards houses having larger kitchens, or a suitable garage or utility room in which such a large appliance can be housed.
Now that people have changed from doing small amounts of shopping often, to getting it all done in a single trip once a week, or at even longer intervals, so larder fridge-freezers have come into their own.
Another factor has been the growing tendency for family members to eat at different times. Busy working mums like to know that they can delve into their freezer and quickly find something which will keep the kids nourished, and yet still have something ready for when their partner gets home which is perfect for the two of them.
And more people are using a king-sized fridge-freezer as the perfect way to save money on meals eaten away from home. Making up meals in advance, and then freezing them until they are required certainly achieves this, as well as reducing the amount of food which goes to waste.
So despite the initial outlay, a capacious American fridge freezer can soon start paying its way in terms of savings on waste and on food bills.
A large and stylish American fridge freezer is the answer to many families’ meal-time quandaries. Anyone looking to buy fridge freezers will certainly find plenty of pointers and inspiration online.
