Korail Class 1000

Technical details

As of 1974 South Korea don’t have experience of manufacturing and operating EMUs, they are based on then Japanese models. Electric parts were based on JNR Class 415, car body was based on JNR Class 103.

Formation

In 10 car formation, TC-M-M’-T-M-M’-T-M-M’-TC.

10XX – Tc (trailer car with control room)

12XX – M (air compressor, battery, main resistor and controller)

13XX – M’ (transformer, SIV, pantograph)

18XX – T (trailer car)

14XX – M

15XX – M’

19XX – T

16XX – M

17XX – M’

11XX – Tc

Usually they are 6M 4T with TC-M-M’-T-M-M’-T-M-M’-TC, it may vary when entering depots.

Batches

1st batch

1115 preserved in Korean Railroad Museum.

1st batch was introduced from 1976 to 1985, trainset 1001 to 1041. General outlook was similar as Japanese EMUs. Trainset 1001 to 1013 were assembled in various Japanese companies. From 1014 they were built in Korean companies including Daewoo Heavy Industries under license. Trainset 1014 has a title “The First Korean EMU”.

They were scrapped from 2000 to July 2004 as their lifetime(25 years) was finished, except several trailer cars and 1001, 1115, 1315. Several trailer cars are connected into some 2nd and 3rd batch cars. 1001, 1115, 1315 is preserved in Korean Railroad Museum. All of them used Guro train depot, with old Korean National Railroad(KNR) livery.

2nd batch

2nd batch includes: trainset 1042 to 1073 introduced from 1986 to 1992, some trailer cars for lengthening to 10 car fleet. Front view and window type has changed, train event recorder was also introduced. As they were all air-conditioned, SIV was introduced for air conditioner’s power.

Traniset 1042 to 1063 used long rectangular window; from 1064 used small square window. Depots are following:

Guro: Built by Daewoo, Hanjin, Hyundai. Trainsets 1×42~1×52, 1×54~1×56, 1×58~1×62, 1×64, 1×66. New Korail livery.

Imun: 1×67(Daewoo), 1×68~1×70(Hyundai), 1×71~1×73(Hanjin). New Korail livery.

3rd batch

Before introducing class 5000 EMUs, they were introduced for increasing needs in triple-track section and lengthening Gyeongwon Line’s EMU to 10 car fleet. Those include trainset 1×74~1×86. Front views are based on class 2030.

Depots:

Imun: Trainset 1×74(Daewoo, 1994). New Korail livery.

Guro: Trainsets 1×75~1×79(Daweoo, 1994), 1×80, 1×81, 1×83~1×86(Hyundai, 1996). New Korail livery.

Refurbishments

For air conditioning, secondary power device was changed in 1986 from motor generator to inverter. Then in 2004 they were replaced by new IGBT-inverter. Air conditioner was changed from piston type to screw motor type.

From 1988 1st batch cars were refurbished for air conditioning.

From 2000 TIS was installed in 2nd, 3rd batch cars. For rapid train, stop notifier was also installed.

From 2006 to 2007 some of 1st batch trailer cars were repainted into new Korail livery, and interiors were replaced into inflammable type. They are connected to some of 2nd and 3rd batch cars.

From 2007 some of 2nd batch cars’ door was changed.

Trailer car refurbishment

Although from 1999 to 2002 some 1st batch cars were scrapped out, part of their trailer cars weren’t scrapped. They were refurbished as cabin car, including 1082, 1182, 1087, 1088~1094. 1087 was already scrapped out, others were in service until 2006. As more older cars were scrapped out later, they didn’t have enough motor cars to control. Currently they are parked in Byeongjeom car depot.

Inflammable interior

2003 Daegu subway fire enforced more strict heat condition in railroad cars. As a result, all Korail cars’ interior was changed into inflammable type. Cars having 5 or more year lifetime were refurbished. Front and side destination indicator, and some train number indicator was changed from film type to LED type.

Preserved cars

Retired 1001, 1115, 1315 is preserved in railroad museum in Uiwang. 1115 and 1315 is part of Korean 1st EMU. When they were just preserved their number has changed to 1001 and 1201, making some controversy.

Refurbished trailer car 1091 is used as theme park in Buljeong station, Mungyeong line.
