World Snooker Championship Review 2011
The highlight of the snooker year the World Snooker Championships starts at the Crucible Sheffield on Saturday morning with holder Aussie Neil Robertson beginning his defence against the hugely talented Judd Trump.
Given the choice, Neil Robertson would not have selected Judd Trump as his first round opponent and the Australian will hope that his Crucible experience gives him the edge against a 21-year-old with an extremely bright future.
Robertson has tipped Trump to be a future world champion after reaching the World Championship for the second occasion.
“He’s got all the right tools and the right motivation and dedication you need,” Robertson said.
“I won my first world ranking event at 24, and he’s won his first at 21, so he’s definitely on the right path.
“He’s going to win more tournaments.
“I think he’ll win the world title.”
The bookmakers have Robertson as warm favourite for this match, although Ladbrokes are prepared to lay odds of 1/2 about the 2010 champion and you can get similar odds on betfair.
It’s been a four year wait for Trump, who first graced the Crucible as a 17-year-old, although his recent victory at the China Open means that he has to be taken seriously and many will have a cheeky each-way punt on him to win the tournament. Sponsors Betfred have a stand-out 40/1 available.
Paddy Power offer 7/4 about Trump beating Robertson in what could be a close contest and there are a few shrewd punters who seem to be backing the youngster at 5/6 (Betfred) with a +2.5 frame handicap.
Meanwhile, Mark Williams is the renaissance man of world snooker after dropping out of the world 32 a few years ago only to return with a vengeance and the man from Ebbw Vale is now second in the world rankings.
Williams has been handed a tricky first round assignment at The Crucible against the experienced Ryan Day, although the bookies make the 36-year-old strong favourite to book his place in the last sixteen, offering a best price 2/5 (Ladbrokes).
His two triumphs in the World Snooker Championship came in 2000 and 2003, which illustrates that he knows what’s required to go all the way in this tournament and Williams now appears determined not to rest until he secures a hat-trick.
However, Ryan Day has the edge in the head-to-head record between the pair, having won on the two occasions they have met. Day has played at The Crucible on several occasions and can be backed at 5/2 with Stan James to secure victory in this match.
