Protecting the Second Amendment
Steve Daines
The Second Amendment is a fundamental Constitutional right and is part of the foundation of laws which make our country great. As put forth in the Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment protects the right of Americans to own and bear arms. I take the protection of these rights seriously and will work diligently to ensure that the right to possess and bear arms remains the law of the land.
Despite the claims of gun control proponents, gun control has never worked to reduce crime. To weaken or eliminate the Second Amendment would put law abiding American citizens at risk while empowering criminals who are already breaking the laws of this country. In this situation, the balance of power would be shifted to the criminal element that would be able to break laws knowing that the vast majority of American citizens are unarmed.
Where we must focus our attention is not on weakening the Second Amendment but on enforcing laws which deal with the commission of crimes while possessing a firearm to their fullest extent. My belief is that law breakers must be held accountable for their crimes using existing state and federal gun laws. Where gun related violent crimes and crimes involving illegal drugs are concerned, the laws should be strengthened to deliver harsher punishments in the form of longer sentences.
Concerning the Second Amendment, my objective goal is to ensure that law abiding Americans have their rights protected as was intended by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. This includes my opposition to federal licensing requirements and national gun registration. These actions are violations of the Second Amendment, could lead to confiscation of firearms, and pose an invasion of privacy of people who wish to own guns legally.
