Decorate Your Summer Beach House in Country Décor
Having a summer beach house is a true luxury and a place that you go to when you want to totally unwind. You can enhance the beauty of your summer home with country décor as well as with sea-themed accents to make it all the more cozy and comfortable.
If you have glass doors that open to the beach, some sleek white chairs and battery operated candles set on end tables would look wonderful. Battery operated candles look just like regular candles when they are lit, except there no open flame but rather tiny light bulbs that flicker in the dark. This type of candle is perfect for providing some nice ambiance in your cottage at night. And because they are safe to operate, you can leave them unattended while you sit on your deck enjoying the view or while you are taking long walks down the beach.
Battery operated candles are widely available today due to the fact that they are so popular which means that you can pick them up at most any gift store or online. They come in different styles and sizes, so choose several types so that you can add dramatic lighting throughout your summer home. i
A beach house is a great place to experiment with colors. Be bold in your choice of paints. Bright turquoise walls with contrasting bold yellow doors and/or floors would make a grand impression and would keep with the aqua theme. Consider buying some colorful decorative flags to hang on the newly painted walls. Decorative flags also look great on front porches, decks and patios so be sure to find a source that sells a good variety of flags so you can find some that match your décor.
Earthy tones in the master bedroom would echo the beach. Look at country-inspired quilts for the bed that feature starfish and seashells. If you have any second hand/antique shops in the area, drop in to see if there are any old trunks for sale. Vinyl-coated trunks fifty-plus years old have wonderful wood under the vinyl. You can peel the vinyl away and then sand the natural wood underneath. Finish by polishing up the metal trim and you will have a wonderful accent piece for the end of the bed which you can use to store sheets and blankets in.
Stars and stripes are great choices for living rooms. Many country décor stores sell rugs with this theme as well as throw blankets and pillows. Consider painting a large star on a blank wall that matches the furniture and rugs. You can pick up wrought-iron chandeliers at flea markets and second hand stores so keep your eyes peeled for a nice chandelier that would bring the living area together. Decorative flags also work in living areas of beach homes so be sure to consider looking for one that matches your theme.
In the bathroom you might want to consider hanging an antique wooden medicine cabinet with a mirrored door on the wall. You could stencil seashells or ducks on the outside of the cabinet if you wish. There are many country-inspired shower curtains on the market to choose from as well as bath mats and accent rugs. A clam shell could hold a sponge and soap on the bathroom sink. If you have a rather ho-hum bathtub in the cottage, consider replacing it with an antique or reproduction claw-footed tub. Drape a clothesline across the bathroom and hang country towels with clothespins for a nice effect.
No beach house would be complete without a canvas hammock hanging on the porch. Wooden shutters also should be considered as they will keep the hot sun at bay during the warmest part of the day. If you want to really go all out, install a ceiling fan on your porch to make the area shady and cool. In the evenings, turn on a few charming battery operated candles so you can sit outside by the glow of candlelight and listen to the crickets chirp and the waves hitting the beach.
