Gone But Not Forgotten
She is a defense attorney who was pulled in a nightmare where a rebirth of a crime takes her hunting for the truth and everything which she holds dear.
It’s the rebirth of the crime from Hunter’s Point NY, to Portland Oregon, got Defense Attorney Betsy Tannenbaum, get caught up in a complicated case where she is to defend Martin Darius against the allegations of murdering the wives of affluent men. The said wives were kidnapped leaving only a black rose and a letter with the inscription “Gone but not forgotten”—the signature used by the so called Hunter’s Point killer. It was only a matter of time before Betsy learned of Martin Darius’ criminal background as an obsessed detective Nancy Gordon tells her that her client and Peter Lake, the man responsible in the Hunter’s Point murders is one and the same.
Admitting to his criminal background, though in truth he was pardoned by the court, Darius has stirred Betsy to a tight hunt as she tries to figure out who the real killer is.
“Gone but Not Forgotten” is one of the most remarkable stories ever written by author Phillip Margolin. It is said to be next or almost like that of John Grisham’s novel—The Firm—which received praises when it was released in the 1993.
The story of “Gone but not forgotten” tells the story of Betsy who got Martin Darius for a client: A shady businessman who has a background check as he once prowled women, kidnapping and raping them, leaving only a black rose with the note “Gone but not forgotten” as a sign that he had been there. After many years, the rose and the note is back but this time the man who was once named Peter Lake (Darius) claims that he, this time, is innocent. With an obsessed detective who wants Justice, and a mysterious survivor from Darius’ last crime, Betsy must find the killer fast before another victim lays dead.
This is one good novel to read: one that is hard to put down once started. It has this draw on the readers that’s quite different the moment Betsy Tannenbaum’s name was first stated on the first page. The intriguing twist, especially on how Darius has affected the life of Betsy, gives it more heart pounding suspense even in parts where Betsy and Darius just sits down and talks about the case. There are particular instances where, even through their conversation, Darius can be seen as a picture of pure evil rather than just being a retired killer.
“Gone but not forgotten” became a TV series during 2004. Brooke Shields stared as Betsy Tannenbaum. In the series, the setting was changed from Oregon to Sacramento. Unfortunately, unlike the book, the series got a 6-out-of-10 rating giving it a not so good review. Still this is no reason to know the story.
Betsy Tannenbaum is one unforgettable character as she gets caught up in the troubled life of Martin Darius as the past haunts the present and leaves anything on it’s way realizing that things aren’t easily forgotten.
