This beautiful stone derives its name either from the French for Turkish, “Turqois,” or from “pierre turquin,” meaning dark blue stone. The word turquoise came to use in the 13th century. This gemstone was first found in the form of beads in native Mesopotamia (Iraq). 13th century Persian traders frequently wore turquoise jewellery in an attempt to harness the protective powers of the gemstone. The captivating Turquoise stone was also discovered in tombs of ancient Egypt, especially the four bracelets of Queen Zar were found on her mummified arm. Turquoise necklaces have even been discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 3500 B.C.
