Overview
McDonald’s offers three varieties of McMuffins for breakfast, but having a likely McMuffin which does little to help start the day off right, at least nutritionally. There are few positive nutritional aspects and many negative aspects to choose McMuffins as a choice of breakfast poor, especially in terms of heart health.
Calories
According to the McDonald’s Web site, there are 300 calories in an Egg McMuffin, 370 calories in a sausage McMuffin and 450 calories in a sausage with Egg McMuffin. All the options are high in fat based on the dietary guidelines for Americans, which is recommended to keep the calories of fat below 35 per cent of the total number of calories.
Fat
More recommended the amount of fat in a McMuffin, and the types of fat they contain are undesirable. A McMuffin contains regular total fat 12 g, 5 g of which come from saturated fat. A sausage with Egg McMuffin contains 27 g total fat, with 10 g accounted for 51 percent of the daily value saturated fat. According to Medline Plus, diets high in saturated fat may contribute to high levels of cholesterol and heart disease.
Carbohydrates and proteins
The rest of the calories in a McMuffin come from carbohydrates and proteins. Each McMuffin contains approximately 30 g of carbohydrates, including dietary fiber 2 g and 2 g of sugar. Fiber content is only 8 percent of the daily value, which leaves much ground to make up the rest of the meals of the day. McMuffins are a good source of protein, containing 14 g in a sausage McMuffin, 18 g in an Egg McMuffin and 21 g in a sausage with Egg McMuffin.
Vitamins and minerals
Each McMuffin is a good source of calcium, providing the 25 and 30 per cent of the daily value. They are also a good source of iron, with 15 percent to 20 percent of the daily value. McMuffins provide the 6 and 10 per cent of the daily value of vitamin A, but only up to 2% of the daily value of vitamin C.
Heart health
A healthy diet for heart provides less than 35 percent of calories from fat, is low in saturated fat and is high in fiber. None of the McMuffins conforms to any of these criteria. They are also high in sodium and dietary cholesterol. Sausage McMuffin with egg provides 95 percent of the daily value of cholesterol, and each McMuffin contains approximately 35 per cent of the daily value of sodium. According to the American Heart Association, diets high in sodium could contribute to high blood pressure and heart disease.
