Selecting a Colour
When contemplating your highlights, Andrea suggests keeping in mind what your natural base colour is also to choose a colour that’s two-to-three shades lighter.
For Brunettes: Caramel blonde. For a funky look: try copper tones.
For Blondes: Wheaty, champagne or platinum blondes. “You can also opt for honey tones or combine two shades,” says Andrea.
To get a funky look: try pink! “Use this colour option sparingly on a few chunks of hair,” she says. “If your hair is long, take a few strands from underneath and so the pink peeks through.”
For Redheads: With red hair Andrea says it doesn’t matter what you’re going to pull orange tones. She suggests blonde shades. “Again, mix and match red tones if you need a more natural look.” For any funky look: add black lowlights.
Placement
When applying highlights, you simply have to work with the most notable layers with the hair. Leaving the lower with the hair untouched can create depth, making nice hair look natural. “You really should keep placement of highlights at heart,” Andrea says. “If you wear nice hair up a lot, worry a little more about putting colour across the hairline of one’s head. If your hair is a lot more just like a bob, don’t be worried about the location behind your head in places you won’t start to see the colour.”
Kits
There are many to choose from. Andrea’s top pick will be the L’Or?al Hi-Light Styliste kit. “The Hi-Light Styliste colour mixes well and it’s thick so it’s just about certified. It’s going to stay on the head of hair strand and won’t run,” she says.
“It also has a brush and a mascara-like applicator wand to help you control the size or chunkiness of the strands.”
Maintenance and Styling Tips
. Just use tepid water when washing coloured hair. Hot water can cause the cuticle to start up as well as the colour will bleed out.
. Only apply your conditioner from the mid-shaft down and comb it through.
Leave on for a good minute. Don’t put any conditioner on roots, since it will weigh hair down. “When you’re combing through hair you want a little bit of foam to exhibit in your comb,” says Andrea. “If there’s a lot of conditioner around the comb, you know you’ve used an excessive amount of. If nothing arrives about the comb, then you’ve used too little.”
