Ways to Reduce Snoring
If you are a chronic snorer, there are a few important steps you can take to alleviate your sleep disorder and stop snoring. Although simple to implement, these basic steps can make a noticeable difference for the majority of sufferers, and give you, and your partner, a good night sleep.
Snoring is caused by the vibrating of soft tissues in the sufferer’s throat, which in turn, causes the snoring sound. Many people are at their worst when laying on their back, a position that tends to lead to mouth breathing. There are a number of useful devices that help the snorer to either sleep on their sides, and/or encourage them to practice nose breathing, a far more natural way to breathe at night.
Nose breathing does become a problem when people suffer from nasal congestion or structural defects to their nose, such as a deviated septum. The simple solution of taking nasal decongestants can make a huge difference and reduce or eliminate snoring for many. If you suspect you have a structural problem with your nose, take a trip to the doctor and look at the solutions. You may just need to wear nasal strips to open the nostrils a little, but surgery may also be an option.
For those that find themselves on their backs and snoring at night, a snoring pillow can be a useful addition to the arsenal. Made of molded memory foam, these pillows position the snorer on their sides and elongate the neck slightly to maximise airway clearance.
If mouth breathing is a problem for you, a snoring chinstrap may be useful. These head harnesses with integrated chin cup, hold the users mouth closed and encourage correct breathing through the nose. These non-invasive devices are extremely effective for many people.
There are also specialist mouthpieces that are used to treat both sleep apnoea and snoring conditions. A little research online can provide you with a possible solution to your sleep disorder.
Julian MacDowell was a life long snorer and sleep disorder sufferer. He found relief from his condition with the use of snoring aids, and in particular, found the sleep apnea mouthpiece a great device, which had almost eliminated his snoring altogether.
