Audi tops premium segment
The competition between the German car producing giants is heating up, Audi, BMW and Mercedes have been battling it out for the top spot of the premium car sector for years. There’s not been much in it with all three brands producing some technologically advanced and beautiful looking cars. Non German premium car manufacturers such as Jaguar and Lexus still have a fair bit to do to catch these three; they are in a league of their own.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced that for February 2011 Audi topped the UK premium car segment. Audi UK sold 3,783 units in February; BMW was not far behind with sales totalling 3,777 units.
Year on year Audi experienced a 27.9% increase for February and recorded a market share of 5.96% – which is a significant increase compared to last year’s 4.31% market share. Audi UK Director Jeremy Hicks said, “While A8 and A7 are performing well, the volume at the top end is in the A6 segment.” Referring to the new Audi A6 being the last of the 3 German manufacturers to enter as a refreshed model he said the A6 was the “the last of the Germans to launch in this class”.
Audi boasts that the A6 is the technology leader in its class; it has features such as an adaptive headlight linked to the sat-nav that gives a short, fat beam in built up areas and a long beam on motorways and also turns on additional side lights when approaching crossroads. Another piece of technology is the small camera in the rear view mirror that reads speed limit signs and displays them on the head-up display.
The new Audi A6 goes on sale from April in the UK.
