Marble and Granite: Make Sure What You See Is What You’ll Get

Outside of budget and installation, the other important aspect of granite and marble selection is the design and color. Aside from the multitudes of colors and grains that make it downright confusing and overwhelming to select just one, there are other things that you need to be aware of in your choice. One of them is the actual stone going to be delivered for your countertops and how the colors would actually come out in your home.

It’s not uncommon for people to comment that the stone that was delivered for their kitchen countertop is different from what they saw in the sample or catalog. Of course, the fabricator or stone provider would have mentioned that to you, but still, you feel that the difference is too striking. The reason for this is that natural stone is never made alike. The sample that you saw may have been quarried from a different slab or a different batch. If you think about it, much of the appeal of natural stone is in its uniqueness–no two slabs can be exactly alike. What you can do about this is to see first the actual slab to be delivered for your granite top and ensure that that is what is going to be delivered. As mentioned in the title, make sure that what you see is what you’ll actually get.

Another issue is that our imagination sometimes gets the better of us. We may think a certain granite or marble color is just lovely, but after installation, you just scratch your head and ask yourself what the heck were you thinking. One way that you can avoid this is by carefully considering the color contrast and combination with your actual kitchen or bathroom. You can also ask for any interactive tools, such as what Lowe’s and DuPont provides, where you get a simulation of how the countertops would look like after installation. CAD drawings may be much to ask of anyone, but should any can offer such a service, it’s worth looking at a 3D projection of what the result would look like before locking in to a certain stone color or style.

It’s easy to jump the gun and fall in love with a certain stone color at first sight. But before you sign that contract and begin the install, just remember this simple precept: make sure that what you see is what you’ll get.
