Steve Daines’ Speech for the Montana Business Leadership Council
In a recent speech to business leaders and lawmakers at a meeting of the Montana Business Leadership Council, Steve Daines shared his thoughts on competitive practices both in the U.S. and in the global marketplace. Daines, a Republican, is running for one of Montana’s house seats in Congress and is also general manager and vice president of RightNow Technologies in Bozeman.
The speech drew on his business experience both as a manager of Asian operations for Procter and Gamble and his eleven years with RightNow Technologies, a Bozeman-based software solutions company. The first premise of his speech was that competing on price in the global market place is extremely difficult as there is always the threat that someone will almost always be able to make and deliver a product for a lower cost. The continuing improvement in product quality means that lower cost products don’t necessarily suffer from the defects that they did in the past which makes price competition tough as well.
“Where we can differentiate ourselves is in service,” said Steve in defining where one of America’s key competitive advantages exists. Referring to RightNow Technologies, Daines said, “What we do is help companies deliver a great customer experience.” The ease of delivering the company’s solutions lies in the advent of “cloud computing” which Daines said “Instead of a company installing all the hardware and software and people, you just turn on a computer, open up a browser and the software is delivered through your browser.” RightNow Technologies is a proven competitor, doing half of its business with well known Fortune 500 names.
