There was a time when people either grew their own food or purchased it locally. Of course, this was prior to the supermarkets dominating the food market.
At one time, people either purchased their food from local stores in the area or raised their own food animals and grew their own produce. This was a time when global warming and food miles were unheard of because the food didn’t have to travel very far. These days you can only get close to food that is raised and grown locally at a roadside stand where the people selling the food know someone who is a local farmer who has their own their own fields. When you visit a supermarket now, the lamb is from New Zealand, the rice is from India, the vegetables are from Kenya, and the fruit is from Israel.
You are contributing to global warming whenever you purchase food that isn’t locally produced as a result of the food miles that the product travels. There are people who believe that GM foods that can be locally grown are more appropriate to eat because of the modification that they receive. For instance, there are several fruits like bananas that can’t be grown in the colder parts of the world such as the United Kingdom and require a hotter climate. It seems that they should be able to be modified to allow them to be grown in greenhouses in the United Kingdom. It seems like it would be kinder and more economical to the earth to grow food in large greenhouses in the United Kingdom rather than growing them in nearby Spain or France without the required artificial heat and then transferring them to the United Kingdom by refrigerated settings by air freight, sea, rail, or by road. There are websites and local farmers markets that can provide local food that are becoming more popular all the time. In addition, television chefs are doing their share to assist with this effort. When local food is in season, it is very inexpensive and very fresh. Local food is available in farmers markets when it is in season and can find nearly anything that you want to know about this topic at your local library and on your favorite search engines.
Recently, there has been a television program called the peoples supermarket which is about a supermarket in London that tried to purchase local food for the shelves in the supermarket. They had a very difficult time trying to find the numerous products that would normally be found in the average supermarket. Frequently, the owner of the supermarket determined that fields that had numerous acres of apples, which the supermarkets didn’t want, were being burnt because it was less expensive for the farmer. This is a horrendous waste of food. It seems that the farmer could have sold the apples at a small road side stand for a small charge. It would reduce the food miles and save tons of waste every year if the supermarkets, which account for the majority of the food that is purchased, bought the apples and then sold them very inexpensively. The people would probably select the less expensive apples rather than the more expensive alternative food that simply looked better but was imported. During a weak economy, local food creates local jobs that are needed badly.
